Here are some highlights of a survey concerning religion reported by MSNBC. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34352940/ns/us_news-faith/ Americans mix and match religions.A growing number are experiencing ‘awakening,’ and there is: ... tremendous growth over the past three decades in the number of Americans who say they have had a religious or mystical experience. Nearly half of Americans say they have had a religious or mystical experience, or a "moment of sudden religious insight or awakening". That represents a doubling since Gallup asked in 1962. ...24 percent of those surveyed overall and 22 percent of Christians say they believe in reincarnation, the idea that people will be reborn in this world again and again. ...About 1 in 4 Americans believe in Eastern or New Age ideas, including reincarnation, which is part of Buddhism and Hinduism; yoga as a spiritual practice; spiritual energy in things like mountains, trees and crystals, and astrology. ...Roughly 3 in 10 Americans say they have felt in touch with someone who has died — up from 18 percent in 1996. The survey of more than 4,000 adults was conducted by phone in August; the total sample size has margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

Sometimes, a loose understanding of the astrology events in a certain time period can help us understand the waves of event materialization and our inner process. My friend, astrologer Judith Goldberg from Baltimore, sent this:
Several important astrological events will take place this winter. They delineate a journey into a new space. In all cases, finding the house in your chart where a particular event occurs will help you identify the life issues to which it applies. The theme that emerges from the new moon in mid-December carries all the way through the cycle into next May.
DECEMBER 16TH : NEW MOON IN SAGITTARIUS 24°
New moon, new beginning. A new vision is birthed. Meditate on what is wanting to come forward. Sagittarius rules, freedom, truth, optimism, expansion, abundance, the future, vision and the big picture. This is the beginning of a six month journey. Where does this moon fall in your chart?
DECEMBER 21ST : WINTER SOLSTICE SUN ENTERS CAPRICORN 0°
Capricorn is earth energy. It is time to anchor the vision. Meditate on burying the seed. Bless it. Again this can be done in a meditation. It will germinate underground for several months and sprout at the Spring Equinox.
DECEMBER 21ST: MARS TURNS RETROGRADE AT 19° LEO
Mars entered Leo on October 17th. Due to the long retrograde it will be in this sign until June 6th. This combination of fire planet and fire sign is highly creative. During the retrograde period, Mars, an energy normally dedicated to action, will instead be introspective. This is a time for generating lots of new ideas. Re-invent. Inspire yourself.
DECEMBER 27TH: MERCURY TURNS RETROGRADE AT 21° CAPRICORN
Again, another opportunity for introspection. Reflect. In earth sign Capricorn, this is a time to examine what structures are needed to make your vision and creative ideas into a reality. How will you go about building on your vision? Barriers to its manifestation, such as old belief systems, will show up to be cleared or resolved.
JANUARY 16TH MERCURY STATIONS DIRECT AT 5° CAPRICORN
This is a time to integrate the lessons of the retrograde and make concrete plans. Begin testing the waters.
FEBRUARY 4TH 2010 MERCURY EMERGES FROM THE RETROGRADE SHADOW
Another green light.
FEBRUARY 14TH: SATURN TURNS RETROGRADE AT 4° LIBRA
(Valentine’s Day) The Saturn retrograde lasts until May 30th. On April 8th Saturn returns to Virgo for about 3 months. This is a time to analyze your priorities, create balance and pay attention to your relationships and your health. It is a time to explore what difference you can make in the world.
MARCH 11TH: MARS TURNS DIRECT AT 0° LEO
Finally, this is the time to take real action! Initiate new projects. Inspire others by your example.
MARCH 21ST : SPRING EQUINOX
A further boost to moving forward. Another new beginning.

I went to a party tonight where a small group of us broke away from the main group downstairs and gathered in an artist's studio upstairs to sing old songs. It was a great time. And I remembered a song by John Denver that I really liked. It's an incredibly beautiful love song (here's the mp3) called "For You." So we looked it up online and listened to it on youtube. I remembered that I had had a truly profound connection with John Denver a few years ago when I was invited to attend a play in Denver at Christmastime about his life, called Almost Heaven. After that, I also remembered that I had also happened to be in Denver when John Denver died—me from California in Colorado, he from Colorado in California—and I heard his memorial live on the radio while I was driving somewhere—and had to stop my car and pull over; it was so moving. And I just sat there and cried.
After the play, I was tied to him in some way for awhile, and I wrote an editorial for my newsletter then, and a poem. I pulled it up tonight out of an old file folder and decided to make it available again. You can download the pdf of Almost Heaven. There is something so inspiring about the spirit he instilled in so many of his songs, and in his life. I was happy that I'd somehow come upon it again, now as we near Christmas, when it's so fitting to remember the depths of our love and passion for humanitarian service, and the magnificence of the human spirit. I mourn the lost lives of people like him—people who might have gone on to contribute so much more to humanity, who seemed to be just hitting stride. To think about it again makes me even more committed to do what I can do, for his sake, and for the others like him, who left seemingly too soon.
Not many people know that Denver was to have gone into space on the Challenger rocket. At the last minute he was replaced by Christa McCauliffe. He wrote an excruciatingly powerful song about the impact their deaths had on him, called "Flying for Me." Not too long afterward, he died similarly, in an accident in the air. We must wonder about the logistics of the soul's intent in situations like this. . .
A client sent me this photo she took of Denver, backstage after a show in his early years.
Just wanted to let you know that I'll be on Paradigm Shifters with host Veronica Entwistle, this Tuesday night, December 8, 8-9pm PST; www.bbsradio.com.
The call in numbers are: Toll Free 888-815-9756 US/Canada, 530-327-7602 Line 1, 530-776-5185 Line 2
One: swing legs over side of bed
two, three: stand, walk to bath
four, five, six: turn on water, clutch washcloth, flood face with suds
seven, eight, nine: scrub teeth, brush hair, look good—
already, tiny tasks number near a hundred,
and on to the kitchen, food, the ten components in a cup of coffee,
to my list, to the next twenty parts of starting a new day.
A string of separate acts becomes a stream
whose waves I can barely see;
this task creates the next, and that one the next,
and where is a line of demarcation?
Gone! I am swimming.
Each act is also a cooperation; no creation comes of itself.
Left and right hand, eyes and nose, make the buttered toast.
Voice, ears, and fingers make the first phone call.
I join with objects and others and movements.
Together we living and inanimate beings collaborate
on the thousand-million proliferating things,
and we welcome the help of untold others in unseen realms,
invisibly assisting the Flow.
We all merge into a big Situation,
happening of its own innate grace,
a river of enthusiasm and telepathy and helpful intent
and focused will and authenticity and release and fresh urges.
I am complex now, not really an "I"; identity is superfluid.
As I stop pausing to watch fragments, to count,
the Whirlpool pulls me in,
hypnotizes me, tires me, sucks me down
through the door to dreams
where I close eyes on the swirl and clutter,
feel true simplicity,
belong deeply in the dark,
spread out infinitely,
remember effortlessly. When I wake each morning I think I'm alone. This poem copyright by Penney Peirce 2009. Angel painting by Nanne Nyander, Sweden.
